Back in the mid-1950s, a man by the name of Howard Hughes purchased 25,000 acres of land through the Hughes Tool Company. The majority of this land was acquired for the mere price of $0.25 per acre, as the land was considered virtually worthless at that particular time.
By 1987, Summa Corporation advanced to exchange 5,000 acres of land adjoining Red Rock for 3,000 acres of land that would become Summerlin South. In 1990, Summa Corporation subsequently began construction of Summerlin, in Summerlin North. The name Summerlin was given in honor of Howard Hughes’ grandmother, Jean Amelia Summerlin.
Fast forward to 2004, when the Howard Hughes Corporation exchanged more land along the mountains for additional land that was further into the valley, adjoining Summerlin South. By 2005, this move was followed by approval to annex over 900 acres into Summerlin South, which increased the total area of Summerlin real estate. This year (2005) also marked the year the community first printed its newspaper, the Summerlin News.
